Research Project 2026: The Golden Mean, the Principle of Flow and AI in Performance

As an artist, I have employed the principle of The Golden Section as one of the central compositional devices within my visual art practice. The sources of these works—selected urban cityscapes and natural landscapes—have also functioned as sites and scenographic backdrops for my performance-based work. Due to severe illness, my physical capacities have been significantly compromised for several years, this has prevented the execution, documentation, and filming of live performances. In response to these constraints, my current research investigates the application of The Golden Section as a symbolic framework for temporal and spatial coherence within performance.

In order to sustain and further develop my practice under these limitations, I have chosen to integrate artificial intelligence into my creative methodology. This decision is also informed by the broader context in which contemporary visual and performing artists are confronted with fundamentally altered conditions of production and societal perception. By incorporating this emerging technological tool, I aim to critically reflect on the profound transformations shaping artistic practice and lived experience today.

Maria Kossak understands the Golden Ratio as the “universal signature of the living principle.” The artist examines the Proportio Divina (divine proportion), which manifests as the enigmatic ratio 1:Φ within natural structures spanning the microcosm and macrocosm. The Golden Mean, defined by the aspect ratio Φ ≈ 1.618, generates the Fibonacci spiral and constitutes a foundational design principle in art and architecture. This principle synthesises the complementary geometries of the circle and the square and, through its harmonising capacity, may be interpreted as a symbolic articulation of the relationship between spirit and matter, as well as a state of equilibrium between chaos and order, movement and stasis.
